Launch of the ASME/ANS RA-S-1.1-2024 Standard for Enhanced Nuclear Risk Management

Launch of the ASME/ANS RA-S-1.1-2024 Standard for Enhanced Nuclear Risk Management

The release of the ASME/ANS RA-S-1.1-2024 standard continues the ongoing partnership between the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the American Nuclear Society (ANS). This 2024 edition focuses on Level 1/Large Early Release Frequency Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA) specifically tailored for Nuclear Power Plant operations.

The RA-S-1.1-2024 standard delineates the methodology for conducting a Level 1 Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA) encompassing both internal and external hazards during the operational phase, aimed at assessing the core damage frequency (CDF). It further outlines a preliminary Level 2 Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA) framework, essential for the evaluation of large early release frequency (LERF), while explicitly excluding security threats such as sabotage and terrorism from its scope. The standard is primarily designed for current operating light water reactor (LWR) power plants but is also adaptable for plants under construction or advanced LWR designs, with potential modifications to meet specific requirements.

This 2024 iteration is an evolution of the previous versions, building on the substantial updates introduced in the 2022 edition. Enhancements in the latest edition include the streamlining of internal consistency, the refinement of definitions for better clarity, and the elimination of obsolete provisions. Noteworthy advancements feature:
  • Enhanced integration of acquired knowledge for uniformity across technical elements, the implementation of cross-references for streamlined peer reviews, and the introduction of a section dedicated to evaluating the technical soundness of innovative methods.
  • Improved stipulations for conducting Human Reliability Analysis.
  • An annex designed to clarify action verbs, thereby facilitating a more precise interpretation of requirements.
  • Streamlined guidelines for the regular maintenance and updates of Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA)
Crafted through the concerted effort of the ASME/ANS Joint Committee on Nuclear Risk Management, this document represents the collective expertise of over 200 global professionals from various sectors of the industry. This committee's dedication has been instrumental in propelling the standards for nuclear risk assessment forward, thereby fostering a safer and more dependable future for nuclear energy.

This initiative not only underscores the commitment of ASME and ANS to elevate safety and reliability standards in nuclear power but also sets a new benchmark for the industry, guiding it towards more secure and efficient operations.
