ASME Announces Policy Impact 2021

As travel to Washington, D.C. for in-person meetings remains impractical due to the on-going coronavirus pandemic, ASME has announced a new premiere public policy program, ASME Policy Impact, which will be convened virtually May 24-26, 2021.
This new program, available for free to all ASME members, will include plenary talks, briefings, and discussion panels on the science and engineering issues of the day, and the opportunity for ASME members to meet with their congressional delegation based on their constituency, including both of their state’s Senators and their local congressional district Representative in Congress.

President Biden Announces $2.25 Trillion Infrastructure Plan
President Biden has announced a four-part, eight-year plan that includes $621 billion for transportation and $650 billion for initiatives tied to improving public safety and accessibility to essential services, such as clean water and high-speed broadband investment. The proposal also includes $580 billion for strengthening American manufacturing, $180 billion of which is proposed as investment in non-defense research and development.

Unconscious Bias Explored in Newly Launched DE&I Podcast
This month, ASME released the first episode of a new podcast devoted to the themes of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. The inaugural episode is co-hosted by Kushi Sellahennedige, chair of ASME’s Boston Section, and Oliver Martinez, S&C project engineer, and explores the topic of “Unconscious Bias,” focusing on what it is, how it can affect decisions without the decision-maker even knowing it, and how it can impinge on your long-term success.

House Energy and Commerce Committee Examines Texas Power Grid Failure
The House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations recently held a hearing titled, “Power Struggle: Examining the 2021 Texas Grid Failure.” The hearing delved into the causes and consequences of the crisis, which killed over 100 Texans and impacted commerce, municipal water systems, medical infrastructure, and more than 4.5 million electricity customers across the state.
