Johannes Gutenberg’s System of Movable Type
While movable type originated in China during the 14th Century, Johannes Gutenberg’s system of moveable type reduced the time and cost of producing the printable word significantly – making the publications of books and literacy available worldwide.
Gutenberg’s innovated system, introduced sometime between 1540 and 1550, incorporated several elements that made printing with interchangeable type workable: an oil-based, fast drying ink; durable and easy-to cast metal alloy for making type; a screw press designed for rapid operation ; and an adjustable mold for quick casting of metal type.
