Special Journal Issue to Highlight Analysis and Design of Sociotechnical Systems

The ASME Journal of Mechanical Design is currently seeking manuscripts for a special issue dedicated to the subject of analysis and design of sociotechnical systems. The deadline for authors to submit a paper for the special issue, which will be published in November 2020, is Feb. 1, 2020.

While traditional engineering design has focused on designing optimal technical artifacts, it is increasingly acknowledged that understanding the social and organizational aspects of how designers collaborate and create, along with how systems co-evolve with human and built environments through use, are equally important drivers of value.

In addition, the emergence of new sources of data and the increasing availability of that data creates opportunities to extend design research into sociotechnical areas including collecting and learning from new sources of data, understanding these complex new phenomena, incorporating human individual and group behavior into design, and developing models and tools to govern them. This special issue of the ASME Journal of Mechanical Design is intended to collect and present fundamental scientific contributions across these areas.

The special issue will focus on a variety of topics such as fundamental theories of sociotechnical system design; integrating human behavior (individual and group) into the design process; applications of social and economic networks in engineering design; risk and uncertainties in sociotechnical systems; empirical methods and data collection to study complex sociotechnical system design; and emerging sociotechnical systems in transportation, sharing economy, manufacturing and human-AI systems.

Other topics to be addressed will include quantifying non-functional and human-centric performance measures (such as resilience, evolvability and flexibility); co-evolution of social and technical systems; modeling the interaction of systems and organization architecture; leveraging distributed innovation; design and governance of multi-stakeholder systems; and education and industrial applications of sociotechnical system design. Manuscripts that directly address design issues of sociotechnical systems as well as those focusing on modeling and analysis with clear design motivation and prospect will also be considered for publication in the issue.

Papers should be submitted electronically to the journal at journaltool.asme.org. Authors who already have an account should log in as an author and select “Submit Paper” at the bottom of the page. Authors who do not have an account should select “Submissions” and follow the step-by-step directions. In either case, upon reaching the Paper Submittal page, authors should select “Journal of Mechanical Design” and then choose “Analysis and Design of Sociotechnical Systems” from the special issue dropdown menu.
