New ASME “A Day in the Life” Webinar Series Offers a Look at Real Engineering Careers

Ever wondered what it would be like to be an engineer at Boeing, Aerojet Rocketdyne or Tesla? ASME is now offering the opportunity to find out through a new interactive webinar series that will provide a first-hand look at the day-to-day work of engineers employed at these trailblazing companies.
 
The series, called “A Day in the Life,” is being offered free to ASME members. It kicks off later this month with a live webinar focusing on the activities of a mechanical engineer who works at Boeing. Two more installments will be presented before the end of the year.
 
Each webinar will be recorded and made available online for members to view at their convenience.

The first of the series, “A Day in the Life of an ME Working at Boeing,” will feature Bryan Murphy, a senior mechanical engineer at Boeing. During the webinar, which will take place on Oct. 22 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Murphy will discuss his experiences supporting the spacecraft program at the aerospace and defense giant.

During his 15 years at Boeing, Murphy has contributed to a variety of ground-breaking aerospace projects including the Space Shuttle, the CST-100 Starliner, the Space Launch System rocket, the Lunar Gateway and the International Space Station. Murphy, whose work primarily involves analytical modeling of mechanism dynamics coupled with control systems, is also an active volunteer at a local non-profit makerspace that provides hands-on STEAM education for all ages.

Webinar participants will also have the opportunity to ask Murphy questions about his various duties and responsibilities as a mechanical engineer at Boeing and his experiences working at the company, as well ask for advice and pointers on how to have a successful mechanical engineering career at Boeing. The second webinar will feature Jess Grant, a project engineer in the in-space chemical Thrusters department at Aerojet Rocketdyne. A recent graduate of the University of Washington, Grant’s technical interests include rocket and air-breathing propulsion, test engineering, additive manufacturing and project engineering. His team at the university, the Society for Advanced Rocket Propulsion (SARP), was recently named the overall winner at the 2019 Spaceport America Cup. Grant also volunteers with organizations that assist such causes as STEM education and mentoring, search and rescue, and poverty relief.
 
Grant will be presenting his webinar on Tuesday, Nov. 5 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Learn more or register for the webinar.

“A Day in the Life of an ME Working at Tesla” is the third of the series and will highlight the work of Mitchell Heinzmann, a senior mechanical engineer at Tesla Motors — the world-famous electric car innovator.

During the presentation, which will take place on Wednesday, Dec. 4 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., Heinzmann will talk about his responsibilities leading the design and development of body structures for Tesla’s Model S and Model X as well the structural front and rear bumper systems on the Model 3.
 
Heinzmann also mentors interns on the Tesla’s Body in White Design Team and has been involved in the company’s interviewing process for interns and full-time employees. Learn more or register for the webinar.
