Video: How Does a Robotic Cane Work?
As people approach their senior years, they will need assistance to accomplish everyday tasks, including walking. Mobility impairments affect four percent of people ages 18 to 49. That number increases to 35 percent, as those aged 75 to 80 years will require some form of assistance to walk.
In this video, Ph.D. students Danielle Stramel and Xiya Cao, under the supervision of lead researchers Professors Sunil Agrawal and Joel Stein, walk us through their CANINE project. The device functions as a walking aid, following the user autonomously and coming to their side if they stumble or are about to fall. This project is a glimpse into the future of robotic medicine and rehabilitation.
