When the United States set out to send humans to the moon, it became quickly apparent the astronauts would need a new kind of pressurized suit to allow them to work in the vacuum of space. After some initial setbacks, the space agency and its contractor developed a garment that would protect astronauts from radiation, micrometeoroid impacts, and a 600-degree swing in temperature while enabling them to walk on the moon’s surface.
