House Passes Mathematical and Statistical Modeling Education Act

The House of Representatives recently passed H.R. 1735, the Mathematical and Statistical Modeling Education Act, a key piece of legislation aimed at enhancing education in mathematical and statistical modeling at the K-12 level. If passed by the Senate and signed into law, the bill will provide schools with the resources needed to improve students’ proficiency in these critical areas, which are increasingly essential in fields such as engineering, data science, and economics.

Bill sponsors include Representatives Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA) and Jim Baird in (R-IN) the House, with Senators Maggie Hassan (D) and Marsha Blackburn (R) leading the bipartisan companion bill in the Senate.

The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) endorsed this bipartisan legislation when it was first introduced in 2021, recognizing the vital role that mathematical and statistical modeling plays in problem-solving, innovation, and engineering education. By equipping students with stronger skills in these areas, the bill supports the development of a future workforce capable of tackling complex engineering challenges.

ASME remains committed to advocating for educational initiatives that foster the next generation of engineers and innovators. The passage of this act is a positive step toward ensuring students are well-prepared for the demands of modern industry and technology.
