White House Releases National Strategy for Critical and Emerging Technologies
The White House’s new National Strategy for Critical and Emerging Technologies outlines how the U.S. will promote and protect its competitive edge in crucial fields such as artificial intelligence, energy, advanced manufacturing, biotechnologies, and space technologies. The short, 18-page document shares two vital pillars of success and offers priority actions on how to foster growth in those areas. The pillars are (1) promoting the national security innovation base, and (2) protecting technological advantage. The recommended actions for achieving success highlight public-private partnerships and rapidly fielding innovations and fall in line with the overall “market-oriented” approach the Administration takes regarding technology policy.
The new report is intended to address how the U.S. can adapt to maintain its technological leadership in an age where it is being threatened by countries like China and Russia, which the Administration says “steal technologies, coerce companies [and] undercut free and fair markets.” Doing so requires a strategy that emphasizes the importance of promoting the national security innovation base, which is why the White House is prioritizing national security technologies.
The report also recommends that the federal government “increase priority of research and development (R&D) in developing United States Government budgets.” This point is particularly poignant to this community as increased investment in federal R&D is a key focus area for ASME Government Relations.
