NIST Priorities
The House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology recently held a hearing to discuss the upcoming priorities for the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Dr. Laurie Locascio, the Director of NIST, emphasized in her testimony the role NIST plays in advancing the technological standards that play a vital role in America’s economy.
Dr. Locascio stressed that NIST stands at a pivotal moment in its 125-year history. While NIST has provided trusted weights and measures across various sectors, from agriculture to artificial intelligence, the agency requires additional support to sustain U.S. leadership amid escalating global competition. This is particularly crucial in fields like quantum computing, where significant investments from China pose a competitive threat.
The importance of science-based and science-backed initiatives highlighted Dr. Locascio’s testimony to Congress. She noted that a robust focus on research and development will ensure the U.S. can contribute effectively to international standards discussions.
The fact that NIST is now being tasked with more duties and responsibilities was not lost on the Science Committee members. Congresswoman Bonamici raised this concern, noting that while NIST has been tasked with high-profile responsibilities, it has not been provided with the necessary resources to achieve success. In summary, the committee and Dr. Locascio echoed a similar sentiment: increased investment and resource allocation are imperative for America to continue its unparalleled success and global leadership in this technological space.
