DOE Announces $22.5 Million to Reduce Carbon Emissions from Manufacturing

The Department of Energy (DOE) is seeking proposals for projects that reduce carbon emissions in the manufacturing sector through recovering, recycling, and reusing material waste. Projects will be awarded through the REMADE Institute—part of the Manufacturing USA national network of manufacturing institutes. Up to $22.5 million will be awarded to projects that develop technologies to reduce carbon emissions associated with the production and consumption of metals, polymers, fibers, and electronic waste. Additionally, projects should encompass workforce training components that will help train the next generation of American manufacturers.

Regarding the announcement, Acting Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) at DOE Kelly Speakes-Backman said, “Decarbonizing the industrial sector is key to addressing our climate crisis. These investments will help reduce manufacturing emissions and energy use, while also making U.S. manufacturers more competitive and resilient.”

The request for proposals comes as part of the Biden Administration’s agenda to fight the climate crisis and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. The Administration has identified that 28% of domestic carbon emissions come from the industrial sector, most of which comes from making material itself. The Administration believes that funding projects that promote using recycled materials in the manufacturing process will have significant impact on curbing domestic emissions.
