ASME to Present Nearly 20 Code-Related Courses in Las Vegas

ASME Learning & Development will offer 19 code and code-related live courses — including two new classes — next month in Las Vegas, Nev. The courses, to be held from Sept. 24 to 28, will take place at Harrah’s Las Vegas Hotel.

One of the new courses, “Six Sigma for Engineers and Technical Professionals,” will provide attendees with a fundamental understanding of the Six Sigma methodology for process improvement — a customer-oriented change strategy with a systematic data-driven approach to eliminate waste and enhance performance. The course, to be held Sept. 24-26, employs a practical approach, using lecture, small group case studies, discussions and hands-on activities to enable attendees to learn how to integrate Six Sigma tools, collect and analyze data, and master the concept of generating standard, stable and predictable processes.

A second new class, “Agile Project Management,” will offer participants an introduction to Agile Project Management using the Project Management Institute’s latest PMBOK/Agile guidelines, with practical real-world examples. The course, which will take place Sept. 27-28, will combine lecture, small group activities, quizzes and discussions to help students understand Agile and its relationship to traditional project management practices. Attendees who are interested in taking both classes can register for the “Six Sigma and Agile Project Management for Engineers Combo Course” and save up to $755 on the cost of registration.

Nondestructive Examination — Applying ASME Code Requirements (Section V),” from Sept. 24 to 26, is designed for individuals who require an understanding of the principles, techniques and applications of the key nondestructive examination (NDE) methods. With its emphasis on basic procedures, techniques, applications, advantages and limitations as related to the ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code (B&PV), Section V, for each NDE method, the course should be beneficial for a range of professionals, including design, structural, maintenance and materials engineers, as well as management, supervisors, regulators, auditors and project managers.

Overview of Codes & Standards for Nuclear Power Plants,” to be held Sept. 24-26,  is intended to familiarize mechanical and civil engineers with ASME, its codes and standards, and the ASME B&PV Code as it applies to nuclear facilities. The course will provide students with an overview of Sections III and XI of the B&PV Code and the Guides for the Operation and Maintenance for Nuclear Power Plants. It also reviews Sections II, V, and IX as they apply to nuclear facilities, and discusses the NQA-1 Quality Assurance for Nuclear Facility Applications Standard. Other topics to be covered include a brief history of the B&PV Code; the ASME Boards and Committees, including the Board on Nuclear Codes and Standards; international activity in the area of nuclear codes; and ASME Nuclear Accreditation.

From Sept. 24 to Sept. 27, “Design in Codes, Standards & Regulations for Nuclear Power Plant Construction” will provide participants with details of the ASME Section III, Division 1, code requirements and their technical basis for the design of Class 1, 2 and 3 piping, pumps, valves and vessels for nuclear power plants. In addition to offering attendees an overview of the ASME Section III design requirements, the course will cover topics including methods of analysis and qualification criteria for each type of component; design by rule; design by analysis and qualification by testing; and supplementary requirements imposed by regulation, such as regulatory guides and standard review plans.

Pipe Sizing, Pump Selection, and Water Hammer,” also to be offered from Sept. 24 to 27, will provide attendees with the equations and calculations they will need to understand the relationship between pipe wall stresses and the changes in fluid pressure and velocity for the prediction of a pipe wall failure. The course, which should be of particular value to practicing engineers in the power and process piping areas, will also feature a review of fluid mechanics, including fluid properties, equations for steady and for unsteady flows, flow in a pipeline, friction factor, hydraulic and energy gradient lines, and axial and hoop stress calculations in a pipe wall.

On Sept. 26, ASME will offer “Strategic Thinking,” a one-day course that will introduce participants to strategic thinking tools that will help them make sound decisions and apply proven methods to evaluate risk and determine the best plan of action. Designed for managers, supervisors, and team leaders, the class will show attendees how to recognize opportunities to influence and create strategic alliances, use strategic thinking concepts identify strengths and weaknesses in their work groups, and develop persuasive skills to sell their strategic ideas to others.
