Special Journal Issue on COVID-19 Medical Devices: Prevention, Diagnosis, and Treatment

The ASME Journal of Medical Devices is currently accepting manuscripts for a special issue focusing on the topic “COVID-19 Medical Devices: Prevention, Diagnosis, and Treatment.” Authors who are interested in having their manuscripts included in the special issue, to be published in March 2022, should submit their manuscripts by September 15, 2021.

SARS-CoV-2, the cause of the disease commonly called COVID-19, has now infected more than 179 million individuals and caused over 3.9 million deaths worldwide, putting a huge burden on the healthcare system. The Food and Drug Administration has issued Emergency Use Authorization for many devices designed to be used during the COVID-19 public health emergency. There are still shortages of various devices such as novel breathable masks, rapid and scalable COVID-19 diagnostic devices, and medical ventilators.

This special issue of the ASME Journal of Medical Devices is intended to be a collection of original research that highlights the design, fabrication, and testing of medical devices related to COVID-19 treatment. Manuscripts submitted for this special issue should involve novel devices that address issues linked to the COVID-19 emergency. All avenues of experimental research from proof-of-concept demonstration to exhaustive assessment of new devices, augmented by numerical and/or computational analysis, are welcome. Stand-alone computational or numerical study is beyond the scope of this special issue.

Manuscripts to be included in the special issue limited to COVID-19-related topics include protective devices; diagnostic devices; treatment devices; medical devices; Lab on Chip; and disease diagnosis.

Manuscripts should be submitted electronically to the journal by September 15, 2021, via Journals Connect at journaltool.asme.org. Authors who have an account should log in and select “Submit Paper” at the bottom of the page.  Authors without an account should select “Submissions” and follow the steps.  At the Paper Submittal page, authors should select “ASME Journal of Medical Devices” and then select the special issue “COVID-19 Medical Devices: Prevention, Diagnosis, and Treatment.” Papers received after the deadline or papers not selected for inclusion in the special issue may be accepted for publication in a regular issue.

The guest editors for the special issue are Smruta Koppaka, project manager, New Products Development, Medical Products Division, W. L. Gore and Associates, Inc., USA, skoppaka@wlgore.com; Lisa Friis, C.E. and M.J. Spahr Professor and Chair, Mechanical Engineering, The University of Kansas, USA, lfriis@ku.edu; and Yaling Liu, professor, Lehigh University, USA, yal310@lehigh.edu.
