The Power of Volunteers and Diversity

The Power of Volunteers and Diversity

This April is Volunteer Month, a time to recognize individuals who actively give back to and support their communities. ASME was founded by volunteers who wanted to make the world a safer place more than one hundred years ago, and we are proud to continue that volunteer tradition with ASME today.

April is also Celebrate Diversity Month. By combining our volunteers' contributions with a strong focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion, ASME is able to serve a wide-ranging technical community. Our mission could not be accomplished without the expertise of engineers from around the world and of diverse backgrounds.

We know that diversity fosters innovation, and that is precisely the differences and distinct viewpoints found on diverse teams that make that true. This month provides us with an opportunity to broaden our worldviews and learn about others’ experiences that may be different from our own.

On ASME’s recently launched Community Engagement Center, you can find a broad range of opportunities to volunteer with ASME and give back to your community, from ASME’s K-12 outreach programs to being part of a research team that suggests new sustainability standards.

Our ASME employees have also been working hard to support their communities. Most recently, the Hispanic Organization for Leadership & Achievement (HOLA) Employee Resource Group (ERG) organized a park cleanup event at Tompkins Square in New York City. Our Black Empowerment Network ERG sponsored a pajama and storybook drive to support a healthy sleep routine for children in need.

Finally, thank you to all of ASME’s incredible volunteers -- – for the contributions of time, energy, and expertise that you have given us over the years. The passion and enthusiasm our volunteers bring to this organization is truly inspiring.

With regards

Thomas Costabile, P.E.
