Humans have lived in cities for thousands of years, mostly because the efficiency of sharing infrastructure and services outweighs the resulting noise, disease, and lack of privacy. “Smart Cities,” a concept first floated about a decade ago, add sensors to that urban infrastructure and use advanced computing power to provide urban services more efficiently. The concept is beloved by urban planners, but sometimes citizens are leery of the pervasive surveillance a Smart City requires.
