New plant to draw carbon dioxide from air will capture 4,000 tonnes per year.
The overall purpose of global climate goals is to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide is the most prevalent of those gases, and most efforts to reduce emissions come from eliminating them at the source. The energy sector generates the most emissions, mostly from fossil-fueled generating stations, and electric vehicles attack the issue from automotive tailpipe emissions. Switzerland’s Climeworks AG attacks the problem through direct capture from the air. Here’s a look at its new plant in Iceland, designed to capture 4,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year.
